The Milky Way is moving toward the region historically called the Great Attractor, but that motion is part of a larger flow of galaxies in our local cosmic neighbourhood rather than a simple falling into one object. The Great Attractor is a gravitational concentration in the direction of the Hydra-Centaurus region, obscured by the Milky Way’s own dust and stars, so it was inferred from galaxy motions before it was directly mapped.

It is now understood as part of the larger Laniakea Supercluster, which includes the Milky Way. Galaxies do not sit still in the expanding universe; they also have their own peculiar velocity due to local gravity. Observations show the Milky Way and nearby galaxies are streaming toward a mass concentration in that direction at roughly 600 km/s, though that motion is not caused by a single isolated thing but by multiple large-scale structures.

Current explanations suggest the Great Attractor accounts for only part of the motion, with the much more distant Shapley Supercluster likely contributing strongly as well. So, the phrase “pulled toward the Great Attractor” is a useful shorthand, but the real picture is a web of gravitational influences across the local universe.

A good analogy is a river flowing downhill: the Milky Way is one boat in a broad current shaped by several valleys and slopes, not a single whirlpool. The Great Attractor names one especially influential part of that river current. References Hall, S. (2014, September 3).
