New Research on the Expansion of the Universe

The central mystery in cosmology right now is the "Hubble tension." The fact that measurements of the universe's expansion rate don't agree depending on how you measure it. A major international effort has produced an ultra-precise measurement of the universe's expansion rate, confirming it's faster than early-universe models predict.

By linking multiple distance-measuring techniques, scientists have effectively ruled out simple measurement errors as the cause, making the Hubble tension look more real than ever, and potentially pointing to physics beyond our current models. A new analysis incorporating a variety of distance markers, calibrated to minimize uncertainties across the cosmic distance ladder, indicates an expansion rate for the nearby universe of about 73.5 km/s per megaparsec, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics on April 10.

This stubbornly conflicts with the ~67 km/s/Mpc figure derived from early-universe data. Physicists have developed a new method using the gravitational-wave background, called the "stochastic siren method," to more accurately measure the Hubble constant.

By analysing the absence of a detectable gravitational-wave background, the approach constrains lower Hubble constant values and, when combined with existing techniques, improves precision. It offers a promising new avenue to help address the Hubble tension.

An international team led by the University of Barcelona has developed a powerful new framework called CIGaRS,published in Nature Astronomy, which extracts more information from Type Ia supernovae using imaging alone, without the costly spectroscopic observations traditionally required.

This paves the way for making the most of data from the upcoming Vera C. Rubin Observatory. One of the most dramatic findings recently comes from dark energy data. New data from major dark-energy observatories suggest the universe may not expand forever.

A Cornell physicist calculates that the cosmos will continue expanding for roughly another 11 billion years before reaching its largest size, then could begin collapsing, ultimately ending in a Big Crunch roughly 20 billion years from now. This conclusion stems from data collected by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which mapped hundreds of millions of galaxies to probe cosmic expansion and hint that the rate of expansion changes dramatically over time.

Scientists at the Dark Energy Survey published their most detailed account yet of how the universe has expanded over the last six billion years, using an unprecedented combination of cosmic measurements led by Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and including researchers from Cambridge. 2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year.

The Hubble tension isn't going away, dark energy may be behaving unexpectedly, and new tools from gravitational waves to next-gen observatories are giving cosmologists sharper ways to probe these mysteries. The possibility that the universe could eventually reverse its expansion is back on the table in a serious way.
