Neil Gehrels Observatory Swift Sees Mega Black Hole Shred Star

NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory has captured something astronomers had never witnessed before: a black hole flaring to life as it tore apart a star far from the centre of its host galaxy. Most black holes that trigger these violent star-shredding events sit at the core of a galaxy, making this an unusual and revealing exception.
"We were looking for these star-shredding events as a way to find otherwise invisible supermassive black holes wandering away from the galactic cores where they usually reside," said Robert Stein, a research fellow at the University of Maryland, College Park, and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. "With this discovery, which is one of just a couple that have been confirmed so far, we've validated a new technique and can use it to hunt for more."
Stein led the study, published Monday in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
The event in question is known as a tidal disruption event: a star wanders too close to a black hole and gets ripped apart by overwhelming gravitational forces, producing an intense flare. The black hole responsible has a mass roughly a million times that of our Sun, and sits in a galaxy about 750 million light-years from Earth.
Astronomers first noticed something odd, an unexpected brightening, back in November 2025, spotted by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), a sky survey run out of Palomar Observatory in Southern California.
According to Stein, ZTF picks up roughly half a million flashes across the sky every night, and it took a new AI-based detection system to flag this one as a likely tidal disruption event, notable precisely because of where it occurred, far from the galaxy's centre.
At its peak, the flare briefly outshone the entire galaxy it belonged to in ultraviolet light, blazing with the brightness of about 10 billion Suns for several months.
Astronomers then turned other telescopes toward the ZTF source to dig deeper. The SOAR (Southern Astrophysical Research) telescope in Chile captured the event's spectrum, and what it revealed lined up with what you'd expect from a tidal disruption event.
From there, researchers brought in NASA's Swift Observatory to examine wavelengths that ground-based telescopes simply can't pick up. Swift's UVOT (Ultraviolet/Optical Telescope) measured the flare's temperature and clocked it at a scorching 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit (30,000 degrees Celsius).
"The combination of all this data helped us rule out other explanations and confidently say it's a tidal disruption event, despite its strange location," said Jonathan Carney, a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who captured the first spectra supporting that interpretation.
