Ludwig van Beethoven: Violin Sonatas

15 September 2026

Background:

  • Beethoven composed ten sonatas between 1797 and 1812, which changed chamber music by giving equal importance to both the violin and the piano.
  • Opus 12 (1797–1798): Three sonatas dedicated to Antonio Salieri, including No. 1 in D major, No. 2 in A major, and No. 3 in E-flat major.
  • Opus 23 and Opus 24 (1800–1801): Includes Sonata No. 4 in A minor and the famous Sonata No. 5 in F major, known as the "Spring" Sonata.
  • Opus 30 (2-3 1802): Three sonatas written during the onset of Beethoven's deafness, including No. 6 in A major, No. 7 in C minor ("Eroica"), and No. 8 in G major.
  • Opus 47 and Opus 96 (1803 and 1812): Features the legendary "Kreutzer" Sonata (No. 9 in A major), a massive and demanding work, followed by the gentle and lyrical Sonata No. 10 in G major.
  • The three most famous violin sonatas are Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24 “Spring,” Sonata No. 7 in C minor, Op. 30 No. 2, and Sonata No. 9 in A major, Op. 47 “Kreutzer.”
