Background:

  • A set of six instrumental masterpieces presented to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt in 1721 as an application for patronage. The original French title being Six Concerts avec plusieurs instruments.
  • The six Concertos were: No. 1 in F major (BWV 1046): Features horns, oboes, bassoon, violino piccolo, and strings; follows a four-movement structure.
  • No. 2 in F major (BWV 1047): Highlights a high trumpet, recorder, oboe, and violin as soloists.
  • No. 3 in G major (BWV 1048): Written for three violins, three violas, three cellos, and continuo.
  • No. 4 in G major (BWV 1049): Showcases a solo violin and two recorders.
  • No. 5 in D major (BWV 1050): Famous for an extended, virtuosic harpsichord solo in the first movement, alongside a flute and violin.
  • ·No. 6 in B-flat major (BWV 1051): Unique for omitting violins entirely, focusing on lower strings like violas and violas da gamba.
