Background:

  • Composed between 1717 and 1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Kothen.
  • As usual in a Baroque musical suite, after the prelude, all other movements are based around baroque dances.
  • Structured in six movements each: allemande, courante, sarabande, two minuets or bourrees or gavottes, and a final gigue.
