Io, the Solar System’s Most Volcanic Sphere

Of all the worlds in our solar system, none is more geologically alive than Io, Jupiter's innermost large moon. With over 400 active volcanoes dotting its surface, Io is a world in constant violent flux; a tortured, sulphur-drenched sphere. Io was discovered in 1610 by Galileo Galilei, alongside Jupiter's three other large moons.
For centuries it was little more than a point of light. That changed dramatically in 1979, when the Voyager 1 spacecraft flew past, and its cameras caught something extraordinary: volcanic plumes erupting hundreds of kilometres into space. Scientists were stunned.
Before Voyager, volcanic activity had only ever been observed on Earth. Suddenly, it was happening on a moon 630 million kilometres away. What drives this relentless volcanism? The answer is tidal heating. Io orbits Jupiter in a gravitational dance with its sibling moons Europa and Ganymede, locked into a precise orbital resonance.
This resonance perpetually stretches and squeezes Io's interior as it orbits, generating enormous frictional heat, enough to melt rock on an industrial scale. Jupiter's immense gravitational pull also flexes Io's surface by as much as 100 meters with each orbit, like kneading an enormous ball of dough from the inside.
The result is a surface unlike anything else in the solar system. Io's landscape is dominated by vast lava plains, towering volcanic mountains, and calderas hundreds of kilometres wide. The largest volcanic structure, Pele, produces a sulphur dioxide plume that stretches over 300 kilometres high and deposits a reddish ring of sulphur compounds across a region the size of Alaska.
Another volcano, Loki Patera, contains a lava lake roughly the area of Lake Ontario that periodically overturns in a clockwise wave, resurfacing itself with fresh molten rock. Temperatures inside these volcanic features can exceed 1,600 degrees Celsius, hotter than any lava found on Earth today.
Despite this infernal activity, Io has no impact craters. Volcanic resurfacing buries them almost as fast as meteorites can create them, making Io one of the geologically youngest surfaces in the solar system. The Moon essentially renews itself continuously, painting over its own history in lava.
Io's thin atmosphere, composed mainly of sulphur dioxide, is equally dramatic. It partially collapses and freezes onto the surface each time the moon passes into Jupiter's shadow, then sublimates back into gas when sunlight returns; a daily atmospheric cycle unlike anything on Earth.
NASA's Juno spacecraft has been observing Io in recent years, making close flybys that have revealed new details about its volcanic activity and interior structure. Scientists hope future dedicated missions might one day orbit Io and unlock the deeper mysteries of this extraordinary world.
