There have actually been several fascinating discoveries about Earth's core recently! Here are the highlights: Outer Core Reverses Direction (May 2026) Scientists discovered that part of the planet's liquid outer core unexpectedly reversed direction beneath the Pacific, challenging long-held ideas about how Earth's deep interior behaves.

The study analyzed data collected between 1997 and 2025 using ground observations and satellites, including ESA's Swarm and CryoSat missions. For decades, scientists believed that large-scale flow in the outer core moved mostly westward in a relatively stable way, but that assumption has now been upended.

A New State of Matter at Earth's Centre (December 2025) New research revealed that Earth's solid inner core is actually in a superionic state, where carbon atoms flow freely through a solid iron lattice. This unusual behaviour makes the core soft, which matches seismic observations that had puzzled scientists for decades.

The mobility of these light elements may also contribute energy to Earth's magnetic field. The Inner Core is Changing Shape (February 2025) Scientists confirmed that Earth's inner core reversed its spin (first confirmed in 2024), and in February 2025 the same team revealed changes to the inner core's shape, with deformations detected in its shallowest level.
