Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder
16 October 2026
Diagnosis and Treatment of Multiple Personality Disorder.
Frank W. Putnam.
Guilford (1989).
ISBN: 9780898621778.
The book uses the older term “multiple personality disorder,” the condition is now generally called dissociative identity disorder (DID). Putnam’s work is directed primarily toward mental-health professionals and trainees rather than general readers. The volume became an influential specialist reference in the study and treatment of dissociative disorders.
It is often described as a comprehensive or classic introductory clinical text for practitioners encountering dissociative patients, although its terminology and some treatment assumptions should be read in light of subsequent developments in psychiatry and trauma studies.
The book follows the treatment process from the first interview through later integration and continuing care, combining theoretical discussion with detailed clinical guidance.
Putnam presents an integrated clinical approach covering:
- Initial assessment and diagnostic interviewing.
- The clinical characteristics and organization of alter personalities.
- Establishing a therapeutic alliance.
- Stabilization and crisis management.
- Psychotherapeutic techniques, including hypnosis, dream work, and “cross-inventorying.”
- Psychopharmacology and family, group, and video therapy.
- Therapeutic abreaction and post-integration treatment.
