August 2006: Pluto Reclassified as a Dwarf Planet

Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930, by Clyde Tombaugh, a self-taught astronomer working as an assistant at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. Using photographic plates and a blink comparator, Tombaugh detected a faint object that shifted position against the background stars, confirming the existence of the long-sought “Planet X.” The observatory announced the discovery on March 13, 1930, coinciding with Percival Lowell’s birthday.

For more than seven decades, Pluto was regarded as the solar system’s ninth planet. However, discoveries of other distant bodies, including Eris, which is similar in size to Pluto, prompted the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to establish a formal definition of “planet.” On 24 August 2006, the IAU ruled that a planet must orbit the Sun, be nearly round because of its own gravity, and have cleared most other objects from its orbital neighbourhood.

Pluto satisfies the first two conditions but not the third because it shares the Kuiper Belt with many other icy objects. It was therefore placed in the distinct category of “dwarf planet,” alongside objects such as Ceres and Eris.

The decision generated public protest and continuing scientific debate. Some planetary scientists, including Alan Stern, argue that dwarf planets should still be understood as planets, while others question whether a scientific classification should have been decided by a vote involving astronomers from many fields.

NASA’s New Horizons mission, launched in January 2006, reached Pluto in July 2015 and revealed a surprisingly dynamic world. Its surface includes mountains, rifts, glacial flows, young ice, and Sputnik Planitia, a vast plain of frozen nitrogen with remarkably few craters. The heart-shaped region observed during the flyby was named Tombaugh Regio in honour of Pluto’s discoverer.

Although Pluto’s official classification changed, its scientific and cultural importance endured. The reclassification increased public interest, and Pluto remains a key example of how scientific definitions evolve as new discoveries expand our understanding of the universe. Its exploration also demonstrated that small worlds can possess complex geological activity.
