Artemis II

NASA’s Artemis II is a highly anticipated crewed lunar mission planned as the next major step in humankind’s return to the Moon. The launch, currently scheduled for no earlier than February 2026, will send four astronauts on a roughly 10-day journey around the Moon and back, marking the first time humans venture beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972.
Artemis II will launch from Kennedy Space Center atop the Space Launch System (SLS) Block 1 rocket. The crew consists of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen from the Canadian Space Agency. The Orion spacecraft, powered by its European Service Module, will carry the astronauts on a lunar flyby, reaching as far as 9,200 km beyond the Moon before returning to Earth.
While Artemis II will not include a lunar landing, it is a crucial step for testing the Orion’s life support, propulsion, navigation, and deep space communication systems with humans onboard. The launch with SLS Block 1 rocket into low Earth orbit, then transition to a highly eccentric Earth orbit for system checks lasting about 24 hours.
It will test the proximity operations demonstration in Earth orbit, including manual thruster operations for future docking procedures. Furthermore, the trans-lunar injection using the Orion’s main engine will send the crew towards the Moon on a free return trajectory; a path bringing them back automatically should systems fail.
A lunar flyby with the spacecraft coming as close as 7,400 km to the lunar surface is scheduled, offering the crew unique vantage points and scientific observation opportunities. The return trajectory and splashdown will be in the Pacific Ocean, with recovery teams retrieving the crew and spacecraft.
Scientific and technical goals include the validation of the Orion spacecraft’s life support and deep space navigation systems under real conditions; testing the new hardware including optical communications for high-speed data transmission between Orion and Earth; to carry experimental payloads (such as 3D organ-on-chip tissue cultures for deep space radiation studies) to help tailor astronaut health strategies for future missions, including Mars exploration.
Artemis II is not just a precursor to a lunar landing but also an essential milestone for future, more ambitious missions, including long-term lunar habitation and eventual Mars expeditions. Its success will provide necessary insights into spacecraft performance, crew health, and deep space communications ahead of Artemis III, the planned lunar landing mission.
