Background:

• Written in 1894 in New York City, for his friend and cellist Hanus Wihan. Premiered in London on March 19, 1896, by the English cellist Leo Stern.
• Initially, Dvorak regarded the cello as totally insufficient for a solo concerto.
• After listening to Victor Herbert’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30, twice, Dvorak was inspired to write his Concerto.
