Altering Consciousness: Volume 2

8 February 2026

Altering Consciousness: Multidisciplinary Perspectives. Volume 2: Biological and Psychological Perspectives. Editors: Etzel Cardenas & Michael Winkelman. Praeger. 2011. ISBN: 9780313383083.

Altering Consciousness, Volume 2 provides the biological and psychological complement to Volume 1, exploring how neurochemistry, brain systems, and developmental processes underpin experiences such as hypnosis, dreaming, shamanic states, and mystical experiences. It also examines how these states relate to emotion, psychopathology, and therapeutic and healing processes, contrasting pathological alterations with adaptive and potentially salutogenic ones.

Etzel Cardeña (born 9 November 1957) is a Mexican-born psychologist who holds the Thorsen Chair in psychology at Lund University, Sweden. He directs the Centre for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP).

Michael Winkelman is a medical and psychological anthropologist whose work centres on shamanism, altered states of consciousness, and traditional healing systems. He has been a faculty member in anthropology at Arizona State University.
