David Finkelhor (born 1947) is an American sociologist and one of the most cited scholars in the fields of child maltreatment, family violence, and victimology.He is currently Professor of Sociology at the University of New Hampshire, where he also serves as Director of the Crimes against Children Research Center and Co-Director of the Family Research Laboratory.

Finkelhor graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1964, then attended Harvard College, earning a B.A. in Social Relations in 1968; during his undergraduate years he also studied at the Institut d’Études Politiques, University of Paris (1967).He completed an M.Ed. in Sociology at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1971 and received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of New Hampshire in 1978, studying under family-violence researcher Murray A.

Straus.
